Testing Priorities

Right now coronavirus tests are limited.  Here are the guidelines on who should get tested first to  help us keep the virus under control.

Symptoms

If you do not have the following symptoms, you may not be able to get a test:

  • Cough

  • Shortness of breath

  • Fever

  • Chills

  • Repeated shaking with chills

  • Muscle pain

  • Headache

  • Sore throat

  • New loss of taste or smell

*Note:  Not everyone will have all of the symptoms.  If you are experiencing any of these, you should contact your doctor or a healthcare professional as soon as possible.

Priority 1

People in hospitals will be tested first to make sure they can get better if they are sick.  This is also to make sure they don't spread the virus to other people in the hospital. This group includes:

  • Hospitalized patients

  • People who work at hospitals and have symptoms of COVID-19

Priority 2

People who are at a high risk of getting very sick will be tested second to make sure they can get help quickly.  This group includes:

  • People who live in nursing homes and group homes

  • People who are 65-years-old or older

  • People who have other health conditions that put them at risk

  • Police officers, fire fighters, paramedics and other first responders

Priority 3

To make sure that the virus doesn't spread through our community, this group of people will be tested if there are any tests left over:

  • Other people who have to work during the outbreak (essential employees)

  • Anyone with symptoms of COVID-19

  • Other hospital staff and first responders

  • People who have mild COVID-19 symptoms that live where many people have gone to the hospital due to the virus

Non-Priority

People who do not have any COVID-19 symptoms may not be tested.
